1
Look for combs made from all-natural materials, such as bone or wood, as opposed to hard plastic or metal combs that can break the hair. Because artisans carve natural combs by hand using a single piece of material, these combs do not have the vertical seams located on the inside of the teeth that snag the hair shaft.

2
Purchase a comb that is right for your hair type. If you have thick or wavy hair, be sure to use a wide-toothed comb. Combs with narrow teeth work well for short or fine hair.

3
Choose a detangling comb for hair that has many small tangles. A detangling comb has wavy, wide-set teeth. Use a detangling comb when your hair is dry, or a pick to remove tangles when your hair is damp.

4
Run your fingers through your hair to remove most tangles, but for stubborn knots, use a detangling comb. Firmly grasp a section of hair and, starting from the bottom and working your way up, carefully detangle the hair.

Tips & Warnings
There are several products on the market that you can use to help detangle your hair. Purchase a deep-conditioning crème rinse or use a detangling spray on wet hair. Additionally, apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to the ends of wet or dry hair to prevent tangles.
Never use a brush to detangle hair as it can stretch the hair, causing it to break.
