Anyone who has ever dyed her own or someone else's hair knows how damaging hair color is to clothing. Once a hair dye stain sets in, it's almost impossible to remove. Hair stylists need to make sure to protect a client's clothing from the hair dye.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Recommend casual clothing to your clients. If you are new to dying hair, then let your first clients know that you prefer them to wear casual clothes to the salon. Let them know that they'll be more comfortable as well.

  2. Step 2

Request that they put on a smock. You should keep a smock with your hair coloring tools.

  3. Step 3

Fold a towel and place it around the client's neck. The towel protects her clothing and skin from getting stained with hair dye.

  4. Step 4

Secure a cape around her body. You should use a large cape that drapes over the client's entire body. Position the cape so that it covers the clothing completely and then tie it behind her.

  5. Step 5

Use another towel to cover the cape if you want. If you are concerned about staining the cape, then you can wrap another towel around the client's neck. The client should now have all of her clothing completely covered.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do get hair dye accidentally on your client's clothing, you should offer to pay for the article. However, many clients will insist that it's not necessary.
  • When dying your own hair at home, use old shirts and towels to protect your clothing from stains.
