Step 1
Consider the client's natural hair color, eye color and skin tone. Use hair swatches in various colors to show the client a number of options.
-
Step 2
Position each swatch against the client's eye color and skin tone. Make it easy for the client to visualize the new hair color and overall look.
-
Step 3
Advise the client on the range of color options available. Decide on the level of commitment to coloring: temporary, semi-permanent, permanent. Explain hair care requirements of each choice, in terms of maintenance.
-
Step 4
Determine whether the client has cool or warm skin tones. Note cool skin tones in most people with blue-black, dark brown, ash or golden blond natural hair color. Pick up warm tones in clients with red, gold, auburn and strawberry natural hair coloring.
-
Step 5
Look at the veins on the underside of the forearm. Notice that bluish-looking veins are likely a cool skin tone while veins with a green tint probably hint at a warm skin tone.
-
Step 6
Choose a new hair color to complement the skin tone. Highlight the complexion, minimize flaws and play up the best features for the most youthful look.
-
Step 7
Try rich colors like chestnut, deep golden brown or mahogany with warm skin tones. Choose highlights of copper or cinnamon. Highlight hair for cool skin tones with honey, taupe and wheat. Use intense base colors in reds, blonds or shades of brown.
