1
Read the green, which is the area of grass directly around the hole. This technique is used to determine which direction and how hard the ball must be hit to get it in the hole. Look at the land itself along the most direct path from your ball to the hole. If the land is flat or sloping toward the hole, it will require less speed than if the land is sloping away from the hole.

2
Stand next to your golf ball and line your toes up with the hole, standing with your feet together and the golf ball in the center. Separate your feet to shoulder distance and make sure that your toes are pointing straight ahead. Place your putter next to the ball and swing back no more than three inches. Swing forward, hitting the ball and continue with your swing, so that you finish two feet pass the ball location.

Evaluate the results. If the ball is within two feet of the hole, this was a good effort. Past the hole indicates that the line was correct, but the speed was too fast. Short of the hole indicate that the line was correct, but the speed too slow. To the left or right indicates that the line was wrong.

4
Practice accurate putting by setting up a practice putting area in your house. Place a target on a carpeted floor and take three golf balls. Line up the golf balls in a row equal distance from the target.

5
Read the green to determine the correct line. Set up in your putting position and then hit each ball with the intention of hitting the target.
