If you have gotten a manicure, you've probably had your fingernails buffed. Buffing the fingernails removes ridges from the nails, makes the nails shiny and helps nail polish adhere to the fingernails for a longer period of time. Follow these easy steps to buff fingernails during a manicure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Coarse buffer
  • Smooth buffer
  1. Step 1

Examine your fingernails and look for any rough or uneven spots. Buffing can help remove any ridges or unevenness on your nails. If you don't have ridges or uneven spots on your nails, buffing your nails won't be essential.

  2. Step 2

Use the coarse buffer to buff your fingernails. Gently rub the long side of the buffer back and forth across the nail. You will want to remove any visible ridges or unevenness in the fingernail. Buff the fingernail until you are satisfied with its overall smoothness.

  3. Step 3

Buff the fingernail with the smooth buffer. Rub the smooth buffer back and forth across the nail as described in Step 2. Using the smooth buffer helps make the nails shiny. Although this buffing is not required, it will make your nails look their best.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the remaining nine fingernails.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some buffers have a coarse and smooth side. You can use this type of buffer instead of a separate coarse buffer and smooth buffer. Be sure to read the instructions that come with these all-in-one buffers before using them.
  • Instead of buffing your fingernails to remove the nail ridges, use ridge filler. Apply this product to your fingernails in a similar way to nail polish to fill the ridges.
  • Be careful to buff your nails gently. If you don't buff with gentle motions, you can thin out and damage the fingernail.
  • Don't buff your fingernails more than once a week. Too much buffing can damage the fingernails.
