Functional fitness is focusing your workouts to benefit you in everyday situations. When you carry groceries, lift your toddler or reach for something up on a high shelf, you are using different body groups together. Traditional workouts don't always include functional movements. Exercise alone won't provide you with long term benefits. Read on to learn how to benefit fully from functional fitness.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn what weightlifting exercises are considered functional fitness. Generally, using free weights verses using a machine is going to provide you with some sort of functional fitness exercise. A bent over row, for example, simulates bending over to pick something up off of the ground.

  2. Step 2

Strengthen your abs and your back. Use a stability ball when doing these exercises to work on your balance while you strengthen your core. Pilates classes are a good way to help you develop core strength.

  3. Step 3

Stretch out on a daily basis. Always take at least ten minutes to stretch out after a workout. Consider taking a yoga class to enhance your stretching.

  4. Step 4

Eat a healthy, balanced diet. No body is healthy with exercise alone. What you fuel your body with is just as important. Focus on balancing your carbs, fat and protein. Reduce the amount of processed foods you eat. Avoid caffeinated drinks and drink at least eight cups of water each day.

  5. Step 5

Sleep for at least seven hours a night. Sleep provides you with the energy you need to exercise, is necessary for your body to make the repairs that it needs and helps keep your immune system strong.

  6. Step 6

Take advantage of every opportunity you have to get a workout in. Choose to walk or ride your bike instead of drive. Make extra trips up and down your stairs when cleaning. Making an effort to exercise every opportunity you get will add up and pay off in the long run.
