Pre-flight inspections are the most important thing a pilot can do before leaving the ground. These inspections make sure the plane is in the proper condition to make the flight. The following steps will tell you what to check during a pre-flight inspection.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of everything that should be included during the pre-flight inspection. Follow this each time so you are sure not to overlook an important step in this process.

  2. Step 2

Take your time while inspecting the airplane. A normal pre-flight airplane inspection should take at least 15 to 20 minutes. This should never be rushed.

  3. Step 3

Begin the inspection on the outside of the plane. This inspection should include the ailerons, elevator, and rudder. Each of these pieces should be securely fastened to the plane, but also able to move up and down freely.

  4. Step 4

Look at each wheel on the plane to make certain there no holes or items stuck in them. Also, make certain they all have enough air as well.

  5. Step 5

Walk around the entire plane, inspecting the body of the plane, including the wings and lights. Replace any lights that may be out and make note of any minor repairs that need to be done to the plane, but will not hinder the flight.

  6. Step 6

Check all the switches and buttons on the interior instrument panel. You definitely do not want a technical failure while you are in the air. If any of these instruments are not up to standard, cancel the flight immediately.
