Every pet owner wants a well-trained and well-behaved dog as their companion. Trained canines are easier to control and usually safer in the house and around children. However, if you have a nervous dog, training may need to be delayed until the dog is comfortable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Notice the dog's attitude when you go to the training facility. Look for signs of agitation. The signs of agitation can differ from dog to dog, but may include barking or panting.

  2. Step 2

Look at the dog's body language. The telltale signs of a nervous dog include rigid legs, ears flush against his head, and avoiding eye contact with the owner.

  3. Step 3

Try to engage him in the training session. You can use a favorite treat or toy as a way to see if he is in a good mood. If he continues to show signs of nervousness, you may need to stop in order to avoid the nervousness turning into aggressive behavior.

  4. Step 4

Check his attitude once you leave the training facility. If you notice an immediate calm come over him, you may need to change the site of training sessions to your home.

Tips & Warnings
  • To successfully train your dog, you should attempt to figure out what causes the dog's nervousness. Possible causes include the new environment, other dogs or distrust of the instructor.
  • Don't scold a nervous dog. You increase their agitation and actually push them back in their training progress.
