Things You'll Need:
- Dog leashes
- Chain
- Tie-out
-
Step 1
Buy leashes online or off. If this is the first leash for this particular dog, you may want to buy the leash offline where you can see and feel it.
-
Step 2
Choose the standard six-foot length or choose a longer leash depending on the purpose of the leash. Shorter leashes allow more control. However, if you will be walking your dog in an isolated area, you may want a longer leash to allow him to run.
-
Step 3
Select a retractable leash. These leashes come with a casing that fits in your hand and allows you to dole out the amount of leash you want your pet to have. Rein him in as necessary to teach him obedience.
-
Step 4
Check out nylon dog leashes. These leashes are very durable and are easy to care for as well. They come in a vaiety of different colors.
-
Step 5
Look at the leather leashes. These leashes are durable, and they have the added attraction of softness to touch. This makes them easier on your hands when you teach obedience to your dog.
-
Step 6
Investigate using a long chain with a tie-out (stake) if your dog will be spending a lot of time outside. Place the tie-out firmly in the ground and make sure it is secure enough to hold your dog.
-
Step 7
Attach one end of the chain to the tie-out and the other to the dog. Check on your dog often to make sure he is safe, secure and has water.
