Some dog breeds will need frequent grooming so they do not get dirty and have unpleasant odors, while other breeds can be groomed much less frequently. If you are not sure how often your dog needs to be groomed, ask your vet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Give your dog time to use the toilet before beginning grooming. The experience will be much more enjoyable for him if he does not have a full bladder.

  2. Step 2

Take a toilet break after you finish the preliminaries of grooming, such as brushing, clipping nails and trimming paw pads. Giving the dog a break before beginning the bath will allow her to be more relaxed for the bathing process.

  3. Step 3

Use a kennel lead or a nylon leash when taking the dog out for a toilet break. Nylon can get wet without being damaged.

  4. Step 4

Allow the dog to get a little exercise while out on the toilet break. Grooming typically involves standing still for an extended period of time. Most dogs will need a chance to move around and stretch their legs to remain patient and cooperative for the remainder of the grooming.

  5. Step 5

Remember that small dogs have smaller bladders and typically require more frequent toilet breaks. When grooming a small dog you might need to give the dog a couple of breaks evenly spaced throughout the grooming.

  6. Step 6

Dry the dog after the bath before bringing him outside for another toilet break.

Tips & Warnings
  • Grooming can be stressful for some dogs. If your dog has an accident while being groomed do not respond with anger. Clean up the mess, bring the dog outside for a break and continue the grooming.
