How to Treat Genital Injuries on Dogs
An injury to a dog's genital area can cause serious and long-term problems. You should treat these injuries as gently and as quickly as possible to minimize the long-term effects of the injury. Sometimes, no trauma to the area is apparent.
Instructions
-
-
1
Look for hair stuck to the penis. No hair should be around the penis. The hair is all on the protective sheath that the penis retracts into.
-
2
Remove any hair that is stuck to the penis by gently cleaning the area with warm water. If some hair will not come off the penis, clip the hair with nail clippers.
-
-
3
Lubricate the penis with petroleum jelly or a water-based personal lubricant.
-
4
Wait five minutes for the penis to retract back into the protective sheath.
-
5
Pour sugar on the penis if it is still stuck out. Sugar will make the penis shrink by removing some of the fluid from the penile tissues.
-
6
Leave the sugar on the penis for five minutes. Rinse the sugar off the penis.
-
7
Cover the penis with a wet towel and contact your veterinarian if the penis is still stuck out of the protective sheath. Keep the towel wet to prevent further injury to the penis.
