You're thinking you might try to replace your own spark plugs, after all how hard could it be. But you need to find and access the distributor cap first. Accessing the distributor cap is easy if you have a little knowledge. Here's how to find and access the distributor cap so you can change those spark plugs and start firing on all cylinders again.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chilton's or Clymer manual
  • Screwdriver or socket set
  1. Step 1

Consult a Clymer or Chilton's manual for your automobile's make model and year to find out where your distributor cap is located. There should be specific directions in the manual for certain mechanical repairs which may include spark plug replacement.

  2. Step 2

Locate the part of the air intake system that is blocking your access to the distributor cap. This is a common part that blocks access to the cap.

  3. Step 3

Loosen the part of the air intake system's bolts. This is most likely a plastic piece located near the front of the engine compartment.

  4. Step 4

Remove the bolts and the part of the air intake that blocks your access. Be sure to remember the location of the bolts so you can put them back where they originally were.

  5. Step 5

Find the distributor cap underneath the air intake attached to the engine. It is generally a 4 to 5-inch diameter cap that may be plastic or coated metal. It is generally a bright color such as red or yellow.

Tips & Warnings
  • The information contained in a Chilton's or Clymer manual will help point you towards the distributor cap and give you a layout of the engine for the make and model of car.
