As a magician, your primary focus should be on entertaining your audience. To do this, it might be a good idea to develop a stage character. Because you're working with a made-up person, your character can be as evil, crazy or smart as you want him to be.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Tailor the character you're developing to your audience. If you perform primarily at children's birthday parties, make sure your jokes and explanations are kid-friendly and not too scary.
Step2
Create an original persona. Developing a character is a great way to try out something that's never been done before. Just be sure you create a persona you feel comfortable performing.
Step3
Stay upbeat and funny when performing. While it may be interesting to play it cool, the audience always likes it best when there's a laugh involved.
Step4
Structure your act with stories or lead-ins to your character's magic tricks. Something as simple as a one-liner simultaneously keeps your audience amused and draws them in.
Step5
Answer questions in character. When developing a character, its important to consider how they would respond. This is also a good opportunity to sneak in a laugh or draw their attention to your next trick.
Step6
Consider your character's interests and personality traits when choosing what tricks to perform. A clown magician might do a silly trick with a cane while a dramatic performer could try a mind control trick or sawing someone in half.
