Things You'll Need:
- Soft bristle brush or comb
- Hair gel
- Spray bottle and water
- Rubber band or scrunchie
- Hair clips or bobby pins (optional)
-
Step 1
Brush any snarls and tangles out of your hair with a comb or soft-bristle brush before you begin. Rub some gel between your fingers and smooth the gel through your hair to reduce frizziness.
-
Step 2
Put a rubber band or scrunchie around your right wrist. Hold your hair in your left hand and with your right hand, brush the hair back smoothly (This will be reversed if you are left-handed.) Curly hair tends to dry out quickly, so spray a bit of water to keep it damp as you work.
-
Step 3
Open the hand holding the hair as you brush the hair through your hand. Smooth out the front as much as you like, adding gel to control curls if you want a sleeker look. Hold the hair firmly and make sure the hair is where you want the ponytail to be.
-
Step 4
Use your left hand to slide the rubber band or scrunchie off your right wrist and onto the base of the ponytail.
-
Step 5
Make a curly bun by simply clipping the ends of the hair loosely on the back of the head. Let some curls escape from the ponytail for a romantic look.
-
Step 6
Try a loose and natural ponytail if you have very thick, curly hair. Pull the hair back with your fingers, smoothing lightly as you go, and secure it with a rubber band or scrunchie. Use a little bit of hairspray or gel to help the ponytail stay in place, and let the curls billow out naturally from the base of the ponytail.
-
Step 7
Turn a ponytail into a partial knot, which works very well with curly hair. Separate a section of hair above the ear. Twist it on top of your head and knot it by pulling it through. Secure the ends with clips or bobby pins and allow the rest of your hair to flow loosely down your back.
