How to Respond to Interview Questions

A business interview can rattle anyone's nerves. By preparing for any and all questions, you can go to the interview and demonstrate good business etiquette without the usual butterflies in your stomach. These steps can help get you through an interview with ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrive a few minutes early for the interview. Make a practice run a day or two before to unfamiliar locations. Dress professionally despite the position and take along an extra copy of the resume and references to hand to the interviewer, if necessary.

    • 2

Maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Give a firm handshake when you are greeted and sit up straight. It's a good idea to keep your hands folded in your lap. Lean forward occasionally to make a point but keep large gestures to a minimum.

    • 3

Listen carefully to the question and absorb it for a few seconds before responding. Ask the interviewer to expound on the matter if the question is not clear. Always organize your thoughts before speaking and when you have something to say, respond clearly and succinctly.

    • 4

Be honest, truthful and stick to what is familiar. Respond to difficult question about business by saying, "I have not considered that. I'd like some time to think about it and get back to you, if I may."

    • 5

Sidestep personal questions gracefully by saying, "I prefer to keep business and personal matters separate." Smile, maintain eye contact and use a pleasant tone of voice.

    • 6

Prepare a 3 x 5 index card with 3 to 5 qualities or characteristics you want to convey to the interviewer. Turn the qualities into brief and positive statements about yourself.

    • 7

Send a thank you note to the interviewer within 48 hours after meeting. Use a good quality note card and matching envelope in white or ivory.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be courteous to everyone you meet at the potential place of employment, such as the receptionist and janitor.

  • Handle illegal questions gracefully. Choose to respond with a comment that reaches the heart of the matter. Say, "My family is very supportive of my career and understands that I'll be traveling," or "My disability doesn't affect my ability to perform in this capacity."
