A buckle halter gives you a place to fasten a rope, or a lead, to your horse. This gives you a little more control when you need it, such as during grooming. Not all horses appreciate the buckle halter and may resist putting one on. Doing it properly makes the job a bit more comfortable for both of you.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tie a rope through one of the large metal rings at the sides of the halter. Use this as a lead for your horse.

  2. Step 2

Unbuckle the crown section of your halter and approach your horse from the left. Pass the lead under your horse's neck and bring it around the top of his head.

  3. Step 3

Make a loose-fitting loop around your horse's neck with the lead. Keep your horse in place with the rope while you attach the halter.

  4. Step 4

Place the nose section of the halter over your horse's face. Slip it up over her nose and align the side straps along her cheeks.

  5. Step 5

Attach the crown strap of the halter behind your horse's ears and fasten the buckle. Untie the lead rope from your horse's neck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Begin haltering your horse when he's very young to get him used to the procedure.
  • Leave a two-fingers width of space between the halter and your horse's cheeks. Leave the same amount of space between your horse's head and the crown strap of the halter.
