There are many common exercises, such as push-ups, that you can make more challenging by just adding a little bit of resistance into the mix. Once you have the basic push-up down pat, you can branch out and do dumbbell push-ups with rotation exercises. It's important to watch your form and take it slow--this is not a move for beginners.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5-pound dumbbell
  1. Step 1

Have the stamina. Before you even attempt to do dumbbell push-ups with rotation exercises, you need to be in fairly good shape. You should be able to do several reps of regular push-ups in perfect form. If you aren't at that level yet, continue to practice until you have that skill set down before proceeding.

  2. Step 2

Choose a light enough weight. The dumbbell push-up is challenging, so start off with a light weight of no more than five pounds. Do a few workout routines using that amount of weight before you decide to go with a larger dumbbell.

  3. Step 3

Assume the position. Get down on the floor with your dumbbells a body width apart. Then prepare to do a push-up just as you would a regular push-up.

  4. Step 4

Reach for the sky, lift and rotate. Push up and then, as you reach the maximum extension, pick up your right arm and rotate your shoulder outward as you lift the arm up over your body. Keep it straight and rotate it back down into the push-up position. Repeat this with the other arm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do several reps of the dumbbell push-up for maximum benefits.
