Step 1
Wrap your hands before you put on your boxing gloves to help protect your knuckles and the small bones in your hands and wrist. Have someone experienced in wrapping help you. When done properly, the wrist and hand have protection but they aren't wrapped so tightly that it compromises your circulation.
-
Step 2
Choose boxing gloves according to the type of training you're doing. Gloves are available in different styles and weights. Gloves for speed bags are lighter and have less padding than the heavier sparring and boxing gloves. Heavier gloves are safer for you and your opponent. Try several styles to make sure they feel comfortable and secure around your hand with your wrapping in place.
-
Step 3
Select shoes specifically made for working in the boxing ring. They're made of lightweight material, for ease of movement, but have enough traction so you can move quickly without slipping.
-
Step 4
Wear a boxing cup protector, which offers more coverage than the basic sports cup protector does. The hips, abdomen and groin have more protection from errant punches.
-
Step 5
Protect your teeth with a mouth guard. Choose from a wide variety of mouth guards to find the one that's right for you. You'll find that some are basic, while others mold to the shape of your mouth and provide more shock absorption. Some have a hole for breathing and others require that you breathe through your nose. It depends on what is most comfortable for you.
