Learning to swizzle backward is a skill to learn if you want to perform complex figure skating moves or if you want to enhance your ice hockey skills. By moving in a circular motion with your skates, you can propel yourself backwards.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your feet together and your arms outstretched at your sides. Holding your arms this way will make balancing easier for you as you learn to perform the backward sizzle.

  2. Step 2

Point your toes toward each other so when you move backward, each blade creates one half of a full circle.

  3. Step 3

Shift your weight slightly to the front of your blades to create the push that will move you backwards on the ice.

  4. Step 4

Pinch your knees together and push outward with the front of each skate. Bend the knees while you focus on keeping your back straight.

  5. Step 5

Trace a half circle with each foot and close the backward sizzle by pulling your feet together at the heels. Then begin again with your toes pointed toward each other.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not bend at the waist or you will simply fall forward and onto your hands. Keep your back straight and bend only at the knees.
