How to Bow in Japanese Aikido Martial Arts

Aikido is a Japanese Samurai martial art in which a practitioner uses the attacker's strength against him. Aikido means "the way of the harmony of spirit." Etiquette is important in most martial arts and Aikido is no exception. Bowing in itself is a form of the art and taught to beginners of Aikido.

Instructions

    Bowing When Entering the Dojo

  1. Step 1

    Step back with your left foot from a standing position and start to go into a kneeling position.

  2. Step 2

    Follow with your right foot.

  3. Step 3

    Sit down on your heels. Your toes will be bent and supporting the weight of your bottom.

  4. Step 4

    Place your open hands on your thighs.

  5. Bowing to an Opponent

  6. Step 1

    Move into the bow by following Steps 1, 2 and 3 in "Bowing When Entering the Dojo," above. The basic position is the same.

  7. Step 2

    Place your open hands on the floor in front of you with the thumbs and first fingers touching.

  8. Step 3

    Bow down toward your hands, but always make eye contact with your opponent.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bow when you enter and leave the school or the mat. Schools vary as to whether you bow toward the front of the dojo, a photo of the Sensei or a flag.
