1
Check your antique doorknob. If it turns without opening the door, you may have a loose set screw.
-
2
Look for the set screw which will be on the side of the doorknob, near its base. You may find that the set screw not only may be loose, but missing altogether. This can be easily remedied by putting in a new screw of a similar size.

3
Tighten the set screw with a screw driver when you are repairing an antique door knob.
-
4
Examine the antique doorknob and its functionality by taking out the set screw. Unscrew the antique doorknob by grasping it and turning it counter-clockwise until it falls into your hand. You may clean the threads of the square threaded rod and apply a little oil before screwing the antique doorknob back on.
-
5
Screw the antique doorknob back onto the square threaded rod when you're repairing it. However, make sure you do not over tighten. Make sure a little play remains. Replace the set screw and tighten it.
