Reflexology as a form of disease prevention and healing goes back to Egyptian times. The Oriental culture also traditionally places importance on feet, which they believe are mirrors of the body's condition. The goal of reflexology is to improve function of organs and glands to promote health. To start a reflexology massage, you first warm the feet with your hands.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Increase circulation in the feet by using the correct amount of pressure as you massage in some oil or lotion. Pay close attention to how the person receiving the reflexology massage reacts and adjust the pressure according to her needs.

  2. Step 2

Hook your fingers under the Achilles tendon of one foot and hold the heel in your palm. Squeeze the foot four or five times to help get spinal and lymph fluids moving around in the body.

  3. Step 3

Squeeze the foot four or five times with your palms on the sides, working from the heel to the toes. Place your fingers on the back of the foot and move your thumbs to the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Continue squeezing the rest of the foot, working the big toe and the second toe with one hand and the rest of the toes with the other, repeating each movement four or five times.

  5. Step 5

Switch and repeat the process with the other foot. Once you've completed this step, you've prepared the feet for the next step in a reflexology massage: stretching the ligaments and tendons.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although unscented lotions are fine for a reflexology massage, those with eucalyptus or peppermint can help rejuvenate tired feet and lift weary spirits.
  • Check with your physician before having a reflexology massage if you are pregnant or receiving treatment for any chronic conditions.
