How to Design the Interior of a Recording Studio Control Room

The interior of a recording studio control room is a functional space but also one that needs to be pleasing to the eye and comfortable for those in it. Strike the perfect balance between technical considerations and interior design by following a few simple rules.

1. Draw a scale plan of your room to figure out where to install diffusers and speakers or mark the existing positions of them. This is really important to have when deciding where to put your furniture, as you want to maximize the impact of the diffusers to bounce off the walls and achieve the best possible sound.
2. Measure the dimensions of the room before choosing or buying any furniture or accents so that the room won't look cramped and cluttered. If you don't have a very big space, choose a small couch or chairs, but remember to leave space for a small table or ledge to set drinks on and display materials.
3. Plan your color scheme by considering the style, clients and image you want to portray. If you are aiming for a contemporary feel, then use bold colors such as reds or oranges teamed with a heavily contrasting color like black or silver to give an edgy modern look. For a blues or mellower theme, choose lighter more soothing earth tones, like muted greens or blues.
4. Install your furniture, making sure that everything is aesthetically pleasing as well as comfortable. Position things according to your scale plan by placing the couch or chairs directly between or under the diffusers for the best sound. Add any additional speakers you might have by sitting and listening to the sound and changing the speaker position accordingly.
5. Add any art work, certificates or photos that either coordinate with your color scheme or are relevant to the business. To personalize the space, put up photos of previous recording artists, album covers or framed awards that will interest your clients.
