Some of the best tasting fruit preserves are revered due to the syrup they're in. Granted, starting with quality fresh or organic fruit (and even vegetables) gives successful preserves their foundation for divine flavor and sweetness. However, it's the syrup that gives preserves character and personality. Make syrup for fruit preserves and then drizzle it all on everything from desserts to waffles.

From Quick Guide: Waffles
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with either brown or white sugar to make syrup for fruit preserves. Note that brown sugar will affect the overall appearance, color and taste of your preserves, whereas white sugar will allow you to see the actual shape and color of the fruit in the preserves.

  2. Step 2

Make enough to fill your canning jars by measuring 1 cup of sugar for every 2 cups of water. Add desired spices and flavors to your syrup. Use cinnamon and a small amount of cloves, which are commonly used, but include other spices and ingredients to give your syrup an interesting flavor, such as ginger, nutmeg and lemon juice.

  3. Step 3

Substitute a lot of the sugar with honey if you're concerned about using too much sugar, but realize that large amounts of honey will significantly change the flavor, texture and consistency of the preserves. You can also replace sugar with corn syrup as well to make syrup for fruit preserves, but know it will also greatly change the preserves' consistency, texture and taste.

  4. Step 4

Create a basic syrup with white sugar if you plan to make vegetable preserves, such as jalapeƱo or tomato. Match flavors by picking out spices that go with these vegetables, but keep in mind that your ending result will be sweet preserves.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use raw or organic sugar if you're worried about the health risks associated with refined and processed sugar.
