How to Clip Dog's Black Nails

Clipping a dog's black nails can be a tedious task because you're unable to easily view the quick, which is where the vein is located. By following these steps, you'll be prepared to clip your dog's black nails with confidence.

Things You'll Need

  • Dog nail clippers
  • Paper towel
  • Styptic powder, also known as "Kwik-Stop"

Instructions

    • 1

Position yourself with your dog in front of you. If possible, have a second person take this position, which can allow you to have full use of both your hands. If a second person is not available, use your body weight to maintain control of your dog.

    • 2

Grasp your dog's paw firmly. Maintaining complete control over your dog's paw prevents jerking movements that can cause the clippers to slip and cause injury to your dog.

    • 3

Inspect each nail to view where the quick begins. This also allows you to see if there are any cracked nails, or nails that need special attention.

    • 4

Clip each nail at a 45-degree angle. Starting with the point at the end of the nail, make small, fast clips of the nail back toward the quick.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for each paw. By completing this process in one sitting, it can be less stressful for your dog.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your dog has dewclaws, clip these nails as well.

  • Clipping your dog's nails on a regular basis can prevent nail breakage and make the nail clipping process an easier task.

  • If your dog wrestles or fights while having his nails clipped, try clipping him as he is just falling asleep or waking up.

  • If you cut the quick, don't panic. After wiping the blood away, apply a small pinch of styptic powder to the area and apply pressure for 60 seconds.
