Things You'll Need:
- Dog nail clippers
- Paper towel
- Styptic powder, also known as "Kwik-Stop"
-
Step 1
Position yourself with your dog in front of you. If possible, have a second person take this position, which can allow you to have full use of both your hands. If a second person is not available, use your body weight to maintain control of your dog.
-
Step 2
Grasp your dog's paw firmly. Maintaining complete control over your dog's paw prevents jerking movements that can cause the clippers to slip and cause injury to your dog.
-
Step 3
Inspect each nail to view where the quick begins. This also allows you to see if there are any cracked nails, or nails that need special attention.
-
Step 4
Clip each nail at a 45-degree angle. Starting with the point at the end of the nail, make small, fast clips of the nail back toward the quick.
-
Step 5
Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for each paw. By completing this process in one sitting, it can be less stressful for your dog.
