Brakes stop your car so don't take short cuts when it comes to repairs. For safety purposes, it may be best to let a mechanic clean the rotor, caliper and brake pads on your vehicles—-any self-installation or cleaning is at your own risk.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Support the car with safety in mind on jack stands, or use a car lift for maximum safety. Take all four tires off the car.

  2. Step 2

Inspect the front and back brake set-ups. The driver's side will match the passenger's side front-to-back.

  3. Step 3

Take the caliper off one area at a time—-loosen the upper bolt with a socket wrench and then remove the caliper from the mounting bracket. Spray with as much brake cleaner as is necessary to remove all the dirt.

  4. Step 4

Examine and remove the brake pads one area at a time—-they come out on both sides of the rotor. Use the brake cleaner to remove all the dirt.

  5. Step 5

Identify the caliper frame, loosen the two bolts and lift the frame off the rotor one area at a time. Again, spray with as much brake cleaner as necessary.

  6. Step 6

Use a clean lint free cloth to wipe away grime and dirt particles. Once more, spray with the brake cleaner to remove all the dirt.

  7. Step 7

Prepare to re-install the calipers, rotors and brake pads in the reverse order they came off.

  8. Step 8

Check your brake fluid level after you reinstall the brake parts after cleaning. Remember to pump your brakes as you roll out of the garage—you will have no brakes until the fluid pumps through the lines.

Tips & Warnings
  • Kneepads will make the cleaning a bit more comfortable.
  • Use brake cleaner as much as you need to. It is vital to have no dust or dirt particles on any of the parts.
  • Prepare the work area for a mess—this is a dirty job.
  • Don't let the caliper hang by the brake line.
  • Do one wheel at a time.
