    Measuring With a Lock Template

  1. Step 1

Determine if you want the deadbolt above or below the current lock set.

  2. Step 2

Measure at least 6 inches above or below your existing hardware and mark the spot. Make sure the location of the deadbolt will not interfere with any of your existing door hardware.

  3. Step 3

Tape the lock template that came with your deadbolt to the door according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the template is square with the door.

  5. Step 5

Use your pencil or pen to mark where you need to drill the holes for the deadbolt.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the procedure for the other side of the door so you'll know exactly where to drill on both sides of the door.

  7. Measuring Without a Lock Template

  8. Step 1

Determine the current backset of the existing door hardware. Measure from the edge of the door to the highest point of the existing hardware. It's usually 2 3/8 to 2 3/4 inches.

  9. Step 2

Measure at least 6 inches above or below your existing hardware and mark the spot. Make sure the location of the deadbolt will not interfere with any of your existing door hardware.

  10. Step 3

Mark the backset you determined in Step 1 at the proper height you measured Step 2.

  11. Step 4

Repeat the process on the other side of the door.
