Hot stone massages are often beneficial, as they relax muscles and allow massage therapists to more fully manipulate tissues in the treated areas. If this is a client's first experience with a hot stone massage, she might have some fears or concerns about the treatment. Follow these steps to comfort her before the massage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Allow the client to undress, lie on the table and cover himself in private while you are in another room. If the client feels like discretion is important to you, he will realize you are a professional.

  2. Step 2

Explain the details of the hot stone massage to the client before you begin. Tell her that the stones were sanitized and heated in water and that after the stones are placed on her body, you will massage her muscles with them to improve the flow of energy in her body.

  3. Step 3

Inform the client where you received your training for hot stone massage and how long you have been a massage therapist. Doing so will allow the client to relax once he realizes he is in good hands.

  4. Step 4

Ask the client whether the temperature in the room is acceptable. If the person about to receive the hot stone massage is either too cold or too warm, she may not relax during the treatment.

  5. Step 5

Ensure that the client's head is placed comfortably in the headrest and that the headrest isn't cutting into his face or neck.

  6. Step 6

Encourage the client to let you know if the stones are too hot once the treatment begins or if you're using too much pressure during the massage. Letting her know it's OK to speak up will make her feel more comfortable with you.

  7. Step 7

Play soft and soothing music to promote a relaxing ambiance in the room.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hot stone massages are often used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, insomnia and depression.
  • Do not play music that is loud or blaring. This type of music does not promote a stress-free and relaxing environment.
