Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that is over 400 years old. African slaves in Brazil practiced this art form for self defense in case they should need to use it against slave owners. Some Capoeira moves, such as Au Giratoria, are acrobatic in nature. In order to hide what they were doing, slaves practiced Capoeira to music and today practitioners still use music to perform.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin in a standing position with your legs about hip width apart.

  2. Step 2

Shift both arms in front of you to the right about chest high to create momentum for the first move.

  3. Step 3

Bend down and place your right hand flat on the ground in front of your left leg.

  4. Step 4

Kick the opposite leg (left) up behind you. This begins a spinning motion, which is the hallmark of Au Giratoria.

  5. Step 5

Place your left hand flat on the ground while simultaneously kicking your right leg up behind you. Both legs will momentarily be in the air and your body will spin.

  6. Step 6

Drop your left leg back down to the ground, followed by the right leg.

  7. Step 7

End the self-defense move by standing upright.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn how to control the spin first in this martial art move. Then you can "walk" your hands around in a circle to create more of a spin, as well as kick your legs up higher.
