The side headlock can be used by an attacker to stop air flow and blood flow to the brain. Self-defense moves should be basic and easy to remember to ensure proper execution. Maintain a clear head and remember that you have the upper hand. Your opponent isn't aware of what you know. This Kung Fu technique shows you how to escape from a side headlock.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grab the attacker's hand of the arm wrapped around your head. This maintains your balance and allows you control. You can also go limp like dead weight. Watch for possible knee strikes.

  2. Step 2

Turn your head into the bend of their elbow to make sure you get enough air to breathe. Take a wide step out and bend your knees.

  3. Step 3

Wrap your rear arm or inside arm around your attacker and over his shoulder between your head and his head. Try to reach for his throat or to pull his hair. Do what you can to defend yourself.

  4. Step 4

Lean all the way back and lift your inside leg up as you lift her leg up to take her down to the ground.

  5. Step 5

Vary your take down by hooking your outside arm under the attacker's front knee and pulling his leg up. You can throw your attacker instead of taking him down to the ground.
