Things You'll Need:
- Car
- Rag
-
Step 1
Turn your car engine off. You always want to make sure your car is fully off when checking fluid levels. Not only will the engine be hot, but the chance of the fluid splattering is high.
-
Step 2
Pop the hood of your car. Be sure that you have secured the hood on its post. The last thing you need is a hood to come crashing down on your head.
-
Step 3
Locate the transmission fluid cap or dip stick. This is usually marked by a red top or dip stick. Or the words transmission will be written right on it.
-
Step 4
Pull out the transmission fluid dip stick and wipe it off with a rag. While a car has been running, fluid can splatter higher on the stick. This will give you an inaccurate reading as to the fluid level in your car.
-
Step 5
Reinsert the dip stick into the slot until it is fully inside. Allow it to sit for a second, and then pull the stick out again.
-
Step 6
Look at the base of the dip stick. The base of the dip stick will be marked "add" or "full" with a small gap in between. Make sure that the transmission fluid is close to the full level. If not, then it's time to add some more to your car.
