Step 1
Purchase a wireless modem. The highest quality products with the longest ranges are the 802.11N products. The next standard is the 802.11G. Dual band provides both the N and G frequencies and will be able to interface with older wireless access cards.
-
Step 2
Plug in the power connector and plug the cable between the cable modem box and the wireless router. This connection ensures that the Internet is provided to the router.
-
Step 3
Install the software provided with the router on the computer that is closest to the router. This software allows you to manage the router and create setting and roles for various computers or other wireless devices that you intend to use.
-
Step 4
Turn on the wireless device(s) that you want to access via the router. This can include gaming systems, printers, cameras, laptops, handheld computers, telephones and desktop computers. All devices that you want to connect must have a Wi-Fi card installed or attached. This hardware is used to pick up the wireless signal transmitted from the router.
-
Step 5
Turn on the Wi-Fi option and the devices will automatically find any routers that you are within operating radius of. Select the router you have purchased as the default set up and you will be able to access the Internet without wires. Multiple users can access the Internet at the same time. The speed and performance depends on the router purchased and the original speed of the Internet connection.

on 8/7/2008 Be careful when buying Wireless DSL modem. DSL providers work on different type of networks. Example Verizon works on PPOE and Embarq works DCHP. You will want to be sure that Wireless DSL modem has phone support from manufacturer. Because you may need the equipment configured to your DSL provide specifications to work on their network also do to so many different brands of equipment the DSL provider may all support the equipment they provide or sell.
