Tennis is a complicated and demanding sport. Players need an impressive blend of speed, stamina, flexibility and coordination to succeed in the game. One attribute often overlooked by players in training is their rhythm, which is one of the most important components of any stroke. Players with good rhythm have reliable strokes and produce accurate shots, while players with poor rhythm are often inconsistent.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice your strokes and footwork by hitting against a wall. This is one of the best ways to improve your rhythm and can benefit players of all skill levels.

  2. Step 2

Consider practicing against an automated ball machine. The machine's consistent timing makes it easy for you to groove your strokes. These are also expensive to own, but many clubs have their own available to rent.

  3. Step 3

Break your stroke down into three distinct parts and count them off in your head as you swing. Find a regular rhythm as you take the racquet back, drop it down and then swing through the ball.

  4. Step 4

Ask your partner to hit only to a specific spot on the court. Then, drill whichever stroke needs improving and focus on your timing as you approach the ball and complete your swing.

  5. Step 5

Make your stroke as smooth as possible. Jerky or choppy strokes easily lead to inconsistent shot making and poor timing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Getting consistent ball feeds is critical to developing your timing. Make sure your hitting partner tries his or her best to give you shots that are accurate and reliably paced.
