Quite a bit of work goes into creating a beautifully landscaped area. The finishing touch is often a paved pathway. One attractive way to pave a path is to use crushed stone. The ease of installation and relative inexpensiveness makes it an appealing option for a weekend do-it-yourself project, even for beginners. When done properly, this type of pathway is also easy to maintain.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Twine or garden hose
  • Shovel or spade
  • Rake
  • Tamper
  • Landscaping cloth
  • Edging
  • Crushed rock
  • Utility knife
  • Patio stones or flagstones (optional)
Step1
Outline the path with twine or a garden hose to get an idea of the layout.
Step2
Dig the grass out of the inside of the outlined area, roughly 6 inches deep.
Step3
Even out the soil using a rake and compact it with a tamper. This will lessen any future settling of the path.
Step4
Lay landscaping cloth over the compacted soil and put edging in place. Press the edging into the cloth until it's level with the surrounding grass. Cut away the excess cloth with the utility knife.
Step5
Pour the crushed rock onto the landscaping cloth until it's level with the edging. Compact the stones with the tamper.
Step6
Add any additional touches such as a walking path of spaced out patio stones or flagstones. These are purely for aesthetic purposes. You can leave the path with only crushed rock, if you like.
