How to Knit a Garland Stitch

A garland stitch pattern forms a wide lacy rib pattern. The pattern repeats every seven stitches across a row and after every 14 rows. With more than half of the rows devoted to basic knit or purl stitches, the garland stitch is an easy pattern to master.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how many repeated garland stitches you would like on each row. Multiply that number by seven, and cast on that number of stitches.

    • 2

Purl the first row, but work rows two through five and, later, 11 through 14 in a knit stitch.

    • 3

Complete the 6th row of your garland stitch by repeating this pattern to the end of the row: Knit one, knit two together, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, slip-slip-knit, and knit one.

    • 4

Work row seven of your garland stitch. Purl two together through the back loop, yarn over, purl three, yarn over, and purl two together. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row.

    • 5

Begin row eight. Knit one, yarn over, knit two together, yarn over, slip one stitch, knit two together, pass a slipped stitch over, yarn over, and knit one. Continue down the row by repeating this pattern.

    • 6

Move on to row nine. Repeat the following pattern across row nine to continue your garland stitch. Purl one, yarn over, purl two together, purl one, purl two together through the back loop. Then yarn over and purl one.

    • 7

Finish the complicated pattern in your garland stitch on row ten. Knit two, yarn over, slip one stitch, knit two together, pass a slipped stitch over, yarn over, and knit two. Repeat this pattern to the end of your row ten.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to knit rows 11 through 14 before repeating the garland stitch pattern starting at Step 2.
