Collecting lighthouses can be an interesting hobby that varies from collecting model-sized pieces to collecting a variety of lighthouse memorabilia like pictures, blankets, wall hangings and other household items bearing the image of a lighthouse. A new collector must take some things into consideration prior to starting.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider what you want for your lighthouse collection. There is a lot of criteria to choose from. Are you collecting for the lighthouses you have visited? Lighthouses in certain states? A particular manufacturer of lighthouse collectibles? Once you know some of these answers, you can start looking for your first lighthouses.

  2. Step 2

Purchase your first lighthouse. Based on how you decided to start your lighthouse collection, you can purchase your first one. Be sure to look for good quality, bright colors, markings of the maker of the piece and information about the particular lighthouse the piece is of.

  3. Step 3

Join a local lighthouse collector's group, such as Harbor Lights Collectors Society. Check out their website for information on how to join. Contact other lighthouse collectors in your area. You will not only learn a great deal from these individuals, but you will also discover new ways of building your collection.

  4. Step 4

Contact local gift shops, if you are in a state with lighthouses, often even inland gift shops will stock many types of lighthouses for great prices. Don't forget about estate sales, garage sales and other great places to find even better deals.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never be afraid to negotiate. Even in retail situations you can negotiate. This can be done with any piece, especially if you find a flaw or damage to the piece.
