Performing a monthly self breast exam must become part of every woman's monthly routine. Women can perform a self breast exam while standing, and many women even do it while showering. Knowing how to perform a self breast exam and what to feel for is important.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lift your arm up over your head, while standing, on the side you are examining. If you are going to exam your right breast, lift your right arm.

  2. Step 2

Use the opposite hand to do the self breast exam. With gentle but firm pressure, use three fingers to feel and palpitate the breast tissue.

  3. Step 3

Exam the breast and the areas around the breast. Use a grid pattern to ensure you exam the entire breast. Include the auxiliary area in and around the armpit where the lymph nodes are.

  4. Step 4

Feel for anything out of the ordinary. Monthly breast exams familiarize you with how your breast feels. Feel for any changes, lumps or tenderness. Lumps may be very small or large, soft or hard, and have smooth or jagged edges.

  5. Step 5

Schedule your yearly clinical exam. Monthly exams are important, but it is also vital to have your yearly exam with a health care professional. Be sure to discuss any concerns you may have about your breast health.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many women find it easier to perform a standing exam while in the shower, using soap as a lubricant. Try this method to see if it easier for you. It may make it easier to feel changes in your breast.
