Step 1
Start with your feet together under your hips and your weight evenly distributed. Make sure most of your weight is in the ball of each foot rather than on the heel. When your weight is on your heel, you're heavier on your feet.

Take a step to the left, but keep your right leg standing in place. Put your left foot down so your weight is again distributed on both feet, then push off and return your left foot underneath you.

Change weight and take a step with your right foot to the side.

Step 4
Repeat the sequence rhythmically, but now also allow your arms to move in sequence with your body. There's no set way to move your arms when you to a side to side move, so practice in front of a mirror or videotape yourself to see what looks and feels good.

Step 5
Incorporate turns into your side to side stepping by pivoting when you bring your feet together. Keep the rhythm as you turn; you should be able to step at the same speed whether you're turning or stepping in line.

Step 6
Add Indian stepping to your side to side step to create a more interesting basic dance and a chance to show off your style. Take two side to side steps in each direction, then two Indian steps. Branch out by adding other break dance steps.

Watch other break dancers to see how they use side to side stepping. You'll see that this basic step can convey each dancer's style. Use other dancers as inspiration as you create your own dance style.
