Baking is one of the most nurturing things women used to do for their families, and many still do today. There is nothing like the smell and taste of homemade bread. As a matter of fact there is even a special day for it. Although it is not widely known, November 17 is Homemade Bread Day.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drying rack
  • Serrated knife
  1. Step 1

Tap the top of the bread to make sure it is done baking before removing from the oven. The bread should sound hollow when you tap it. If it does not, bake it a little longer and then test it again.

  2. Step 2

Turn the pan over to release the loaf of bread from the pan after you remove it from the oven. Remember to use your potholder because the pan will still be hot. As a double means of checking to be sure it is done baking, tap the bottom of the loaf and listen for the hollow sound.

  3. Step 3

Remove the bread from the loaf pans and place them on rack to cool so the bottom of the loaves will dry crispy. If you allow the bread to cool inside the loaf pans the bottom of the loaves will be soggy.

  4. Step 4

Store the loaves of bread in the freezer for freshness.

  5. Step 5

Defrost a loaf and warm it in the oven when you are ready to eat it. If warmed in the oven your bread will taste fresh baked.

  6. Step 6

Use a serrated knife to slice the bread for serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you prefer, after the loaves cool you can slice the bread before freezing. This will allow you to only remove a portion of the loaf from the freezer when you want to eat it instead of having to thaw the whole loaf.
