Learning to ride your BMX bike backward, more commonly known as fake, is a fun little trick that allows you to combine several simple tricks into a long string of actions, all of which are more impressive together than when performed separately. While riding fake is deceptively simple, it is a trick that takes some time to master.

From Quick Guide: Xtreme Sports 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grow accustomed to the feel of moving backward on a bike by riding up a ramp and coasting back down. You'll soon discover that you automatically shift your balance when riding fake.

  2. Step 2

Practice steering your bike when riding fake in the same fashion. Be aware that when you steer riding forward, the movement the bike follows is fluid and smooth, but when you steer when moving backward, the results are much faster and very choppy, making it harder to maintain control.

  3. Step 3

Recognize that when you steer a bike while riding fake, you turn the handlebars in the opposite direction of when riding forward to achieve the same results. Since this is counter intuitive to your years of riding experience, you need to achieve a comfort level with this riding technique before moving on.

  4. Step 4

Learn to ride fake on an open and flat surface. Select an area that you're familiar with so you know when you're approaching the sides and ends of your riding area.

  5. Step 5

Ride fake with your center of gravity over the middle of your bike. Face forward while riding. You'll learn to recognize the subtleties of riding fake and build up your speed and ability to turn and steer while doing so.

  6. Step 6

Continue to practice and you'll see a marked improvement in your fake riding.
