If you're just starting out learning BMX bike tricks, mastering the carve is a good place to start. Carves are basic building blocks that are relatively easy to learn. Once mastered, you can move up to more complicated maneuvers. It just takes practice and determination to master, but get this one down and you'll be working on 360s and double peg stalls in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Find a location that has a ramp you can practice on. If you don't have one of your own, locate a skatepark that allows BMX bikes.
Step2
Decide which direction you want to carve in -left or right. It doesn't really matter, so pick the direction you're most comfortable with.
Step3
Get up some speed and head up the ramp. As you get three quarters of the way up the ramp, stop pedaling and keep your legs and arms extended so that you're essentially standing on your bike.
Step4
Keep your right foot forward if you're carving to the left or your left foot forward if you want to carve to the right.
Step5
Turn your handlebars sharply to carve your bike around and back down the ramp.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your legs to pump up and down the ramp so you can keep up your speed as you go back and forth. If you sit down while carving, you may not get up the speed you need and it will be harder to control the bike.
  • Even experienced BMX riders wear safety helmets, so if you're a novice you definitely want to use a helmet and should consider elbow pads as well.
