When learning Brazilian Jujitsu, you practice techniques that can help you disable an opponent. These moves are meant to give you an advantage over your competitor and incapacitate him momentarily. One viable move in Brazilian Jujitsu is the scissor sweep.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get into the correct starting position. For the scissor sweep, you need to be in the guard position. In the guard position, you are on the floor facing your opponent with your legs wrapped around his sides.

  2. Step 2

Place one hand on the opponent's sleeve and other on the collar of his uniform. You want a firm grip, so that you can gain leverage over your competitor.

  3. Step 3

Roll onto your side. As you do this, your knee is going to move across the torso area of the competitor. As you continue to move, your legs are going to move in a scissor formation.

  4. Step 4

Use your arms to assist you in turning your opponent onto his back. As your legs guide him onto his back, your arms must move in the same direction.

  5. Step 5

Finish the move with a strike. Once you have completed the scissor sweep, you can incapacitate your opponent with a choke hold or direct punch. Many competitors save this move as a way to end a match.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only perform this move in a stabilized and controlled environment. You should work on a mat and use a willing participant to practice the move.
  • You should expect to meet resistance while attempting the scissor sweep. The key is to perform the move as quickly as possible.
