How to Do the Rear Naked Choke in Brazilian Jujitsu

The rear naked choke is known to some Jujitsu practitioners as the "Death of the Lion" because of its power and effectiveness. The rear naked choke allows you to perform a choke from behind your Jujitsu opponent without the use of a gi (hence the term "naked").

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get your opponent's back and put your feet over his legs and tucked into the back of his knees so you can get your "hooks" in and prevent him from turning.

  2. Step 2

Draw your arm across the front of your opponent's neck. Try to get the blade of your forearm wedged under his chin as deeply as possible. If your opponent resists by pulling down on your forearm, place the thumb of your free hand against his neck (on the same side as that hand) and lead your forearm into the groove of his neck.

  3. Step 3

Bring your free arm up so your elbow rests on top of his shoulder. Place the hand of your choking arm on top of the bicep of your raised arm. Move the hand of your raised arm up to your ear as if you're holding a phone to your ear. Expand your chest to apply the choke.

Tips & Warnings
  • Alternate choking arms (by leading with the thumb of the free hand) as many times as necessary to get a firm choke. Use this method of alternation to tire your opponent out so you can finish the choke.
