Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) features a number of escape moves. The bear hug escape provides an effective way of getting out of a very dangerous hold and turning the defense into an attack. The BJJ bear hug escape is simple, fast and powerful enough to use on any opponent.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get your base by bending your knees and squatting down in order to get some leverage on your opponent. If his arms are around yours, place both your hands on his hands and push down.

  2. Step 2

Take a step behind one of your opponent's legs with your legs. The step should put you in a position where you're straddling the leg you stepped behind. Maintain a fairly deep squat.

  3. Step 3

Grab your opponent's knee that's farthest from your body. Stand up straight to lift your opponent off the ground. Twist your shoulder and push on his knee to spin your opponent around your back and onto the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep control of your opponent's arm so that you can swing into an arm bar once your opponent hits the ground.
