In shooting an HK handgun, remember that it is a semi-automatic pistol. These semi-automatic pistols are fun to shoot, but you must know how they work safely. There are basically two safety devices on an HK pistol. Use your safety devices all the time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about the first safety device on an HK handgun. It's the switch on the side of the pistol. This is a three-position switch. One position is for "safe." One is for "fire." The last switch is for "de-cock." When your switch is all the way down, this is the safe position. This means the gun will not fire when you pull the trigger.

  2. Step 2

Use the three-position switch on an HK handgun by flipping the slide on the safety to the second position. This is the "fire" position. This means that when you pull the trigger, the handgun will discharge. Slide it to the furthest upright position. This is the "de-cock" position to be used normally when you are carrying the handgun in a holster.

  3. Step 3

Take advantage of the safety devices on an HK handgun, especially the "de-cock" position. The de-cock position means that the hammer of the pistol is released half-way down. It is not fully cocked. It acts as a second safety device. In the de-cock position, the round is in the chamber, ready to fire.

Although you won't use this position when you are target shooting, it is recommended that you use this de-cock position when you are holstering the handgun.

  4. Step 4

Practice using these safety devices on an HK handgun when you are target shooting at the target range so you'll get more familiar with the operation of this type handgun. Instructors at the target range can help you learn about these safety devices so you can be safe when practicing and feel confident in what you are doing.
