How to Do a Drop Kick in Rugby

In rugby, ball control is essential. The drop kick is an rugby skill that allows you place the rugby ball in the location of your choice. With a little practice and the right technique, you'll have a great time playing rugby with more enthusiasm and skill than ever.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Grab the ball so that one point is pointed over the shoulder of your dominant foot. This way, the ball bounces toward you when you drop it.

  2. Step 2

    Stand with your weight on your dominant foot. As you drop the ball, take a step forward and place your weight on your non-dominant foot. This frees your dominant foot to make the kick.

  3. Step 3

    Drop the ball so it falls down without moving sideways from where you were holding it. This will cause it to bounce directly back toward you, allowing you to kick it with more force.

  4. Step 4

    Kick the ball as it comes back off of the ground using the top of your foot. Use your toes to propel the ball forward.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you begin to use the rugby drop kick, the ball is likely to spiral off in many directions. As you begin to understand the way the ball moves, you'll adjust your drop and your foot placement.
  • Ask a friend to tape you as you perform the drop kick. Perform multiple kicks during this session so you can see the differences in your posture and position.
