The cross punch is a power punch used in both kickboxing and fitness kickboxing, typically after throwing a jab. Generate power by turning the hip in the direction of the punch and then extending your fist out straight with as much speed as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with feet shoulder with apart, knees slightly bent and one foot slightly behind the other. Turn the body very slightly to the side in the direction of the back foot. The cross punch will come from the hand on the same side of the body as the foot that is slightly behind.

  2. Step 2

Raise both fists a few inches in front of the chin, as far apart as each cheek, with elbows bent.

  3. Step 3

Bring the punching fist forward and across the body until the arm is straight while turning the corresponding hip and lifting the heel off the ground. Turn the ball of the foot with the hip.

  4. Step 4

Retract the punch back across the body, in the same manner as throwing the punch.

  5. Step 5

Return to fighting stance by rotating the hip back and placing the heel back on the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Retract your fist even quicker than you punched to create power and prepare for the next move.
  • For more power, imagine punching the back of an opponents head instead of the face.
