Jujitsu's cross choke from the guard is a reliable way of taking advantage of the benefits of the guard position. The choke presents you with an opportunity to get a submission from your opponent or even set up a different choke or joint lock a few moves down the line.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Close your guard by locking your feet together on your opponent's lower back. Use your hips to bring your opponent's upper body down towards you. If your opponent resists, grab his gi's lapel and pull down.

  2. Step 2

Insert your first choke hand by placing your four fingers of the hand into the collar of his gi on the opposite side of your hand. Place your hand as deeply as possible so that your knuckles touch the back of his neck. Grip the gi by making a fist.

  3. Step 3

Pass your second hand under your arm that's gripping his gi and insert the hand into the opposite side of the gi's collar. Again, go as deep as possible with your hand and grasp the collar with a fist.

  4. Step 4

Pull down, lift your head and upper body and spread your elbows to execute the choke.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your opponent is skilled enough to foresee the cross choke and block it, use the choke to draw his arm out so you can go for a more advanced choke or armbar.
