Step 1
Place your fingers on the standard tenor saxophone position. Your index, middle and ring fingers of your bottom hand should be on the bottom three keys. Your index, middle and ring fingers of your top hand should be on the second, third and fourth keys of the top stack.
-
Step 2
Start the chromatic scale on low C. With all the standard keys pressed down, extend your bottom pinky down to the set to two keys below the bottom stack. Hold down the lower of the two keys to play low C.
-
Step 3
Play a C sharp. Find the set of four keys accessible with your top pinky. Hold down the middle key on your left side along with all six keys on the top and lower stacks. Release the C sharp key to play a D.
-
Step 4
Move on to D sharp. To play the D sharp, use your pinky to push the top key on the set of bottom pinky keys while pushing all six keys on the top and lower stacks. Release the D sharp key and the key under your bottom ring finger to play an E. Lift up your bottom middle finger to play an F.
-
Step 5
Find the fingering for an F sharp. The F sharp on a tenor saxophone is fingered using all three keys on the top stack and the middle key on the bottom stack. Next, lift up your bottom middle finger to play a G. Then, play a G sharp by pressing all three keys on the top stack and the top key of the set of top pinky keys.
-
Step 6
Put your fingers in position to play an A. Release the G sharp key and lift up your ring finger on your top hand.
-
Step 7
Use the palm keys to play a B flat. Under the palm of your bottom hand you'll see a set of three keys. Press your palm down to press the bottom of these three keys. Finish the chromatic scale with a B. To play B, hold down the top key on the top stack.
