The clarinet has a very wide range. With three and a half octaves, the clarinet has the largest range of all the woodwind instruments. Each register sounds distinctly different from one another. The bottom of the range is very low vibrato notes. The highest is rarely used because it's so high pitched.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clarinet
  • Chair
  • Reed
  1. Step 1

Use both hands to play the chalumeau register. This is the lowest register you can play. The range from the low E is the lowest note of all.

  2. Step 2

Hit the clarinet or throat register by mostly using your left hand. This is the middle register and spans just over an octave. It's where most of the notes are located and is the easiest range to play. This is normally the first register beginner clarinet players learn. It runs from the E note to the B flat.

  3. Step 3

Know that the altissimo register is the top register. It is made up of all notes about middle C. The pitch of each note varies and the tone tends to deteriorate as you go higher. So, the altissimo register isn't used as frequently as the other two.

  4. Step 4

Practice playing the chromatic scale. This is when you go from the very lowest note up to the highest note.

  5. Step 5

Concentrate on maintaining your pitch and tone as your range gets higher.
